Yesterday we met up with my mom and dad for our city’s 33rd Annual Fair on the Square. The kids look forward to this event for weeks, saving their money with the full intention of buying a unique toy…

NRBGA Poster Child
(NRBGA Poster Child – National Rubber Band Gun Association)

but always tossing the majority of it to $6.00 root beer floats…

Rootbear Float and Slushies

and $3.00 bags of cotton candy or kettle corn.

Cotton Candy

There are always prizes to be won, faces to be painted,

Friends

Pink Flower, please.

and in general, good fun all around.

Of All the Designs...

In a town our size you can barely walk 20 feet without seeing someone from church, the kids’ school, or that lady you met last week at Walk*mart … which makes the event all the more special, of course.

Here Meredith wraps her arms around one of the coaches from her school.

Nah, they don't love their coach.

The heat gave way to a sprinkling rain for about 20 minutes about mid-morning, but it seemed no one was daunted and just kept strolling past booths – shopping…

Headband Scarves

Mesmerizing

and visiting with umbrellas in hand.

I’m always attracted to the silver and turquoise jewelry. This was one of the first booths that caught mine and my mother’s eye. I tried-on umpteen rings, but in the end, figured it was too close to family birthdays and the holiday season to be buying $50.00 rings on a whim.

Turquoise

I found a few things that would make great Christmas gifts, like these beaded pouches. This is the one my momma picked up for me. Isn’t she the sweetest thing?

New Beaded Pouch

Jeff jokingly suggested we buy this for one of our kiddos. The one who is *ahem* VERY dramatic.

Drama Queen

The one who likes pink – A LOT.

That's SO NOT Funny

No, silly … not THAT one. This one – over here, dreaming of dance teams and future opportunities.

When I Grow Up

As the day passed the guys grew weary of standing in lines and visiting and went off to talk about more important things.

Jeff and Kenny

Like what to name new stuffed animals.

Growing Weary

It was a fabulous day. Days like this remind me of why I love my town so much and why I feel so blessed to live here, with my family all around me.

Looks like a LOAD of fun! And your kiddos are just so sweet! I still LOVE Em’s glasses!

We are heading to the State Fair in Dallas this week and I am STOKED. That’s one of the things I absolutely LOVE about Texas. The fairs in California just aren’t the same ;)

What a glorious day! And like Kelly mentioned, I am also so impressed with how great the glasses look. Seriously awesome choice.

  • Loralee

Yup-the glasses rule. So does that pink “Drama Queen” thing. I should probably own it. :S

  • Trailin'

I need to get out more and do things like that. The last thing that my town had like that was a 30×60 yard “fair” and we didn’t get to go. But, maybe next year. Glad you all had fun. =]

  • MMM

How fun! I wish I lived in your town! Love the boys’ matching Crocs! Em looks so much like her daddy in her new glasses!

  • Joely

Looks like you had a great day! Thanks for sharing!

  • Marcie

Ohmygosh look at all those headbands! *Twitch*

  • Jenn

Kelly – I figured a fair was a fair was a fair. How can a fair be anything BUT a fair? What are fairs like in CA?

Jill- GlossyVeneer – I’ll pass that on to Em – she’ll love hearing it.

Loralee – Bwahahaha! Okay seriously, don’t buy hot pink painted wooden signs for your house. MOVE AWAY FROM THE CRAFTS!

Trailin’ – I’m the only one in my family that likes to stay “in” and I’m glad they pull me out of my hole all the time or I’d be missing out on so much. DO go next year!

MMM – Oh yes! Kenny’s do match his daddy’s. I laughed at Jeff for wearing socks with is when I saw this photo – normally he’s barefoot in them. But here? WHITE SOCKS.

Joely – You’re welcome! Send me a new photos of the kids will ya?

Marcie and Jenn – Yea, Mer could have bought about 5 or 6 of them if we let her. She looooooooooooves headbands. I liked how they were so colorful up there side by side.

Mrs. Wilson – Small town wonderfulness is just…well, WONDERFUL!

BOSSY – I KNOW, right? Fabulous find.

That sounds like so much fun. It must be nice to live in a small town. Especially when you have kids.

  • Kelly

Well the ones we went to were REALLY small. The food wasn’t as good and they just didn’t feel as “home-y” know what I mean? They didn’t have the parades and people in Texas are so much more friendly and talkative. And real cowboys ya know? TEXAS cowboys ;)

Oh yes. Small town fairs are the best. My kids always have a blast and you don’t really worry about them too much because everyone knows everyone. We’re at the end of our party season until Christmas, when we have a Charles Dickens Day which ends with a flotilla on the river. All the boats put up Christmas lights and float past. It’s so awesome. We are so lucky to live in such a place, like you. I have to say though, you’re shopping is waaaaaay better. I would have been lost at the rings and the beaded purses all day. I have a little DRAMA wanna-be, too. If I show her that picture, I’ll have to make her a plaque.

Sounds so lovely!! We’re eagerly awaiting the Peanut Festival (October 20th), here in the Peanut Capital of the World. Your fair on the square sounds very similar to ours. Kylee was in the Peanut Pageant this past Saturday. THe judges couldn’t see her obvious beauty through the other three and four year olds hair pieces and $90.00 worth of make up. I was so out of my league. What ever happened to little girls looking like little girls. Sorry, I got off on a tangent.

  • SAJ

That’s it. I’m putting OMSHville on my top ten places I’d like to move.

Being a local, I grew up going to the California State Fair. For my family it’s all about food on a stick (my dad’s fave was oysters). Then one year we happened to be in Susanville for the Lassen County Fair. THAT was a fair! Complete with rodeo that started with the national anthem where everyone stood and sang with their hands over their hearts & fireworks at the end of the song. Woot!

Comment if ya wanna.
