Furniture? You’ve got to be kidding me.
|14.Jan.2012So remember how I said it was mine and Jeff’s 17th wedding anniversary? In today’s “modern” marriage climate, I tend to think seventeen years is a pretty big, hairy deal. This naturally led me to consider what exactly it was that I should be awarded* for 17 years (or rather 20, if we count dating time) with this man. A quick Google search turns up Wikipedia’s advice for what to “gift” after 17 years of marriage. If the title of this post hasn’t completely given it away (which I imagine it has/did), the answer is FURNITURE.
Seriously people?
Who came up with this list?
Furniture? Really?!
Now, if you ask Jeff he will tell you that now is the time I invest in a really cool La-Z-y Boy for him. However, I know for a fact that once a man (or woman, for that matter) gets a La-Z-y Boy there is no turning back. No, I’m not being dramatic. I’m sure there is research somewhere that La-Z-y Boys are the “point of no return” for humans across the globe.
- Muscles degenerate
- Abs become more pronounced and rolling
- Osteoporosis sets in
- Balding increases (beginning at the back of the head, moving forward)
- Increased beer drinking
I’m pretty sure intimacy even declines as one reclines.
And so, instead of stepping off the deep end and speeding up the tail-end, we opted for gifts that were more suitable for our current goals.
Introducing my new pair of Vibram FiveFingers. These are the Bikila model, named after Abebe Bikila, who won the 1960 Olympic Marathon running barefooted.
Jeff, not comfortable with the VFF’s toe-separation, decided on another minimalist running shoe, the Merrell Road Glove.
After reading Born to Run Jeff and I are both interested in the long-term benefits of barefoot running, e.g. less injuries with a fore-foot strike, better overall form, and stronger feet and calves.
We began transitioning into the shoes this morning as we hit the beach for a few early morning run/walk intervals. Wow, the difference between minimalist running shoes and our Asics Nimbus 13 running shoes is STRIKINGLY different. I love them both, but the Vibram FiveFingers really helped me understand better how much of a heel-striker I am in my running form.
Ouch.
Our calves are sore, but our spirits are high!
**Note that I’m not discussing what he deserves for staying with ME all this time.

Perhaps if the recliner were situated in the bedroom, the intimacy problem would not occur?

so glad!! welcome to the world of barefooting (i run in bikilas and LOVE LOVE LOVE them … enjoy :). My 2 cents on transitioning though, go easy on them for the first bit, esp if you really were a heel striker. it feels so much better to me though. love that hot pink! oh, and happy anniversary to you two … what a great way to celebrate.

Huh. Now I want to read that book!

And if you got a recliner you would have to say good bye to cuddling on the couch!
Love the shoes & the review is helpful. I’ve never tried them, but I’d like to!

I clilcked over here after reading the book review on PW. What fun to get those shoes. I’m on W4 now on the 3 min/4min/5 min part of this C25K kick. It is a marvelous feeling to complete 5 mins when the initial 45 second jog on Week one had me gasping for breath.
Thanks for the motivation!

I love the new shoes (my mom has a pair and loves them). However, I wouldn’t mind new furniture either.
My 17th is coming up in 2012 too. I’m going to start looking for furniture NOW.
