MobileMe

12 Reasons to steer clear of Apple’s MobileMe:

1. I thought the internet was supposed to be fast. I am on high speed DSL. I’m used to actions being immediate. MobileMe is like trying to get on my grandparent’s dial-up account. I keep waiting for the high pitch ring static sound.

2. MobileMe has a mind of its own. I tell it I want to delete an email, it decides it’d rather keep it. I tell it I want to open my contacts to look for an email, it decides it doesn’t want to. I tell it I want to save new information I entered on a contact, it prefers the old information and won’t save it.

3. MobileMe’s calendar is unreliable. It keeps shifting my time zone – which shifts my entire day’s schedule. It also is inconsistent. Sometimes if I double click on the time-slot to enter a new event it’ll open. Other times it won’t open unless I get OUT of MobileMe and come back. And if you create a calendar event on the iPhone you can’t assign a specific calendar, so it doesn’t color code it correctly.

4. I think MobileMe has a poltergeist. Sometimes I’ll delete emails and when it auto-refreshes, they re-appear in my Inbox.

5. MobileMe doesn’t want to wake up until IT wants to wake-up. Various times throughout the day it will not display ANYTHING. Not my contact information, not my photos, not my calendar, contacts, or Inbox. It will show me the toolbar – almost as if it is saying, “Not now, come back later…I’m tired.”

5. Did I mention how slow it is?

6. MobileMe is slow.

7. Slower than Christmas to a 7 year old.

8. MobileMe cannot compare to gmail – it simply cannot; which is sad since MobileMe cost $100 and gmail is FREE.

9. MobileMe doesn’t allow you to reply with the same address from which an email was sent. For instance, gmail lets me use any and all of my email addresses to respond. My main account is ohmystinkinheck@gmail.com, but I can respond as heather@omsh.com, heather@clothdiapersale.com, heather@timbucktoo.com … WHATEVER. At MobileMe I can create aliases, but it is ALL heathersanders@me.com. Um…not cool.

10. Jon wouldn’t buy MobileMe. I wish I had talked to Jon (a.k.a. ‘Mac Guru’) before buying MobileMe, but the poor man sludged me through my font issues and I feel like I need to leave him alone for a century after that.

11. MobileMe is slower than a line at Six Flags on opening day.

12. MobileMe only gives a refund if you haven’t installed and tried it. Which, of course, is HYSTERICAL.

The only – and I do mean ONLY – thing I like about MobileMe is how smoothly it syncs mail with the iPhone. Whoop-de-doo…so does EVERYTHING ELSE.

MobileMe fails miserably.

And?

It’s slow.
slooooooooooooooow.

Right there with you Heather…. We are long time users and fans of Apple products but this MobileMe is el stinko. I used mac.com for my websites along with iWeb…. once .mac became me.com I have done nothing but swear like a sailor. I wish that companies would realize that sometimes leaving things as they are is better than always trying to improve upon. I think Steve Jobs needs to shake things up a bit over there at Apple.

i’ve had a mac.com account for 6 years now and am sorely disappointed in the change to mobileme. not only did they not tell me that my original homepage.mac.com picture site would disappear when they went to web.mac.com, but #2, #3 & #4. do you also have 15 drafts of the same email in your draft mailbox? it saves the drafts every 5 seconds, so i have the same email each one has more words, just in case i forgot what i wrote 5 seconds ago!! i can’t stand it and wish they’d go back to how things used to be in simpler times. when i had all my contact information and emailed actually worked. argh!!

Thanks for the headsup! I was contemplating making the switch, but you have convinced me! Free’s good enough for now!

Having my own hosting accounts, I just can’t fork out an extra $100 bucks for these “features”. Hard to believe they messed this up so bad, and everything I have is Apple.

I would suggest looking into the http://www.notmacchallenge.com/ but this was created before the iPhone, so there would be no push, etc.

Hopefully they will get it right soon.

Yikes, how disappointing! Too bad you can’t get a refund, but thanks for sharing your disappointment with your readers so maybe you can save someone else the money!

Hey, you put up your new OMSH illo! I got to watch Brenda make that. :-)

I can’t figure out how to use it – so I am glad you think it sucks. I’ll stop trying to figure it out ;)

So…what you’re saying is that once Princess the Irritable Laptop finally moons me for the last time and I get a MacBook Pro, I should totally avoid MobileMe? ;) Okee dokee! (Really, I have no idea what the heck MobileMe is, I just think I’ll avoid it altogether). LOL

I am soooooooooooooooooo with you. It’s a disaster of epic proportions. And I am one of those “pry my Mac products from my cold dead fingers” type people.

Although, I will say, it has seemed to get better for me over the past month, maybe it’s regional?

Hmmm… wouldn’t you know it….just when I almost decide to buy an ipod touch or an iphone (I sit at a desk so why do I need another phone?) …. you bring all my qualms about MobileMe to light! I am a .Mac user that got dragged along with MobileMe… it does do all those quirky things you mention…and is slow…and can’t seem to remember the addresses in my address book…and is slow…

I had this installed for about 2 hours and that was it. However, it still pops up on my PC reminding me my account has expired (about every 5 minutes). I can’t find any trace of the program on the computer. It come alive to stinkin’ haunt me. It’s like a virus … oh wait, I thought Mac didn’t have viruses … worse they have MobileMe.

You give the impression that it’s a bit slow Heather.
    Hmmm.
    You crack me up.

  • JackieW. transplanted Okie (Buried in Legos)

    I heard it’s REALLY slow !

  • Lady S

Thanks for the input. I was thinking when I upgrade my iBook I would sign up, but now…not so much. I have accounts at Hotmail, Yahoo, and Gmail, so I don’t know what I would do with another. And one that sucks, at that.

Comment if ya wanna.
