My children are the ultimate fountain of youth.

Children are the ultimate inspiration to not become an old fart. Seriously, without children I would get up, drink my coffee, get online, work, eat my lunch, get back online, read a book, do some laundry, eat dinner, and go to bed.

In a word?

I would be boooooring.

With children I get to do things like laugh – those deep belly laughs that leave me gasping for air. With children, I get to see everything from fresh eyes – because even though one of them might have outgrown an excitement, the next one in line is experiencing it anew.

"Momma! I remember this one!"

With children an ornament isn’t just an ornament, it’s a “Look at this one! How old was I when I made this?”

Each like to put on THEIR ornaments.

…and “Momma, how come you have the most ornaments?” to be followed by a 12 year old saying, “Because she is so old!”

Oh yes, children teach me that tact is something learned and not internalized.

With children…I can somewhat forget that there are about 6 loads of laundry to do.

With children…I can almost forget the ‘ring around the tub’ or the toilet funk…almost.

With children…I can re-read all my favorite childhood books and see them truly enjoy them for the very same reason I did.

With children…I have an excuse to watch every single one of the old Cosby Show seasons.

With children…I can wrestle, have pillow fights, and pretend I don’t see the big lump of a child hiding beneath the covers…just so he can ‘scare’ me EVERY OTHER NIGHT.

This year the children finally convinced me and Mr. OMSH that only BORING people have all white lights on their house, and so, we broke down and bought the multi-colored outside lights (pictures to come later). Never in a million years would we have considered buying multi-colored lights to adorn the house, but THEY want them and really, aren’t lights for children most of all?

Do adults ever squeal in delight at a street full of lit homes with dancing penguins and polar bears in the front yard? Okay, maybe there are some, but the point is – in OMSHville decorations are for THEM.

Finally tall enough to put some up top!

Our Christmas tree is like a big history project of years gone by – and I LOVE IT.

Diggin' for their ornaments.

Seriously, once I exorcised all the tree demons, I was excited to see it fill-up with all the crafty, popsicle-stick, toilet paper roll, clothespin and construction paper or doily ornaments from years past.

Blankie Boy

And now, I have been informed, I need to start wrapping gifts. “A Christmas tree isn’t a Christmas tree without gifts under it!” my children proclaim.

Uh huh.

Right after I do the laundry.

...and to all a good night.

For now?
I’m just gonna sit and listen to the ‘fountain of youth’ snoring in their rooms while I soak up the silence and stare at their creation.

It sure is a purdy tree, all lit up and shimmering in the night :)

I told my boyfriend I wanted a baby the other day, and he about fainted. It was amusing enough so that I left out the part where I know it won’t happen for years to come, until my life is stable enough to care for a family. It’s just too much damn fun watching him shake.

Emelie is so grown up in that last photograph of her. Whoa.

The tree is just lovely! I am almost inspired to decorate my bare tree…right after I finish the laundry. LOL

  • Jeana

Love it! Our tree is the same way. I even have ornaments I made in preschool.

My favorite part of the holiday season growing up was decorating our Christmas tree. Mom and Dad kept EVERYTHING we made, every ornament we received (or, in my sister’s case, even the ornament she STOLE from someone else’s Christmas tree when she was five) and we all had a blast decorating the tree every year while “The Nutcracker” blared from the stereo. Now I’m living far away from home and it makes me a little sad to think of my parents decorating that tree by themselves, but also happy that this is a tradition I can begin with my own children. Thanks for the reminder.

“drink my coffee, get online, work, eat my lunch, get back online, read a book, do some laundry, eat dinner, and go to bed.”

Have you been spying on me? :)

Loved this post – what great reminders! I think of these things often, but you put it into words in a way that I never could have!

Speaking of crafty ornaments…this year, I’m starting a new tradition in our house. I bought 3 unfinished wooden ornaments from the craft store and we will each write our name and the year on the back of one and then paint it. I figure if we keep this up, we’ll have a pretty neat collection of ornaments.

    Excellent. Amen!

We put up multi-colored lights outside too, but only ’cause DH refuses to be “boring.” The kids really enjoyed seeing us almost break our neck while trying to scale the roof.

We’ll be working on those magazine Christmas trees you posted. It’ll kill me to part with my Family Circle magazines, but it’ll be for a good cause. :)

What a lovely post. :-) Children are delightful, aren’t they? Even though they create horrifying amounts of laundry and messes. Must remember to view the world through my children’s eyes. :-)

Thank you Heather for this post. I have read it and read it and read it … it’s perfect and reminds me once again how wonderful it is to be here in this same (our) small town with the OMSH family, my family. What a wonderful time of the year this is …

Lovely lovely post. Your tree is beautiful!

  • OMSH

Dad – Yep…it is AWESOME having you and Mother so close. Actually, awesome doesn’t fit it.

Great trea! Our tree is our children’s history also. Every ornament they have made ever, hangs on our tree. I love it and so do the kids. They show me every one they made before hanging it on the tree. My youngest is 12 and oldes is 20 and they still love their stuff on the tree.

  • Anna

Well, I agree that all the decorations and lights are for the kids and that is why mine are crazy colors too! I have had quite a few people tell me that they will not change their white lights for colored lights BUT after seeing how much more my son loved the colored lights and how his face would light up around them, did my momma heart even have a choice?! NO!

Now, we have a lovely gaudy house and all in it are happy with the arrangement!

My husband and I often discuss how boring we would be without kids and wonder what we ever did without them. What did we laugh at? What did we find funny? What in the world did we do with all our time?! HA!

  • Mrs. Wilson

It looks great! As do the WHITE lights. I love Christmas decorations with a story. We’re not having a tree this year due to the size (or lack of size) of our place – and the fact that we add two 1-year-olds to our household for 9 1/2 hours a day. I miss the tree.

  • Lanna

Beautiful kids and beautiful tree. :)

  • inadvertentfarmer

LOL…but without them we wouldn’t have 5 loads of laundry or a ring in the tub! So they are our distraction but also the reason for the chores we are so fervently avoiding!

Trees with memories are so much prettier than trees with just ornaments…guess that makes yours gorgeous! Kim
