So, I know you’ve heard me complain of the hot weather and humidity that we Southeast Texans equate with ‘home’, right? Those of you who live NORTH of us (even you Amarillo-ians? Amarillans? Amarillians? – whatever…) will likely laugh when I say that it SNOWED WEDNESDAY NIGHT!
Now, when I say snow, I mean there were flurries in the air, that touched ground, stuck, and stayed there for more than a millisecond. In fact, they stayed overnight!
And for those of you who have no idea why this is such a big deal, let me remind you that we live about an hour and 1/2 from GALVESTON (think Gulf of Mexico).
You know what? It snowed in Galveston too.
There were obviously many more children than normal down on their knees begging for the white stuff, because the last time it snowed like this here I was a ONE YEAR OLD.
Suffice to say, my kids have no idea what cold weather gear looks like. I’m constantly having to wrangle my girls out of their sundresses for church with comments like, “I realize it is 80 degrees, but it is WINTER! You can’t wear a sundress in the WINTER!”
They were frustrated by their inadequate ‘playing gear’ – No gloves for poor Meredith. “The snow is toooo cold to touch with my bare hands!”
Kenny? He doesn’t have gloves either.
Both Meredith and Kenny quickly got over their fear of cold hands when Emelie (who does have gloves, mind you) gathered up a snowball from the trampoline.
Kids that live in Southeast Texas wear no-show socks year round. Is there any other kind of sock worth wearing? Well maybe one day every few decades.
Before I knew it they were all covered in the white powdery glory that was about 1/2″ thick across the top of the trampoline.
This shot is like those horror movies where you scream at the movie screen, DON’T TURN AROUND!!!! RUN!!!
Except I didn’t scream.
A Momma’s gotta have some fun, right?
Bad, bad Emelie.
Big sisters are so relentless, are they not?
Mer took it in stride though – and then her ‘stride’ got tangled up in the longest scarf known to child-kind and the girl went down; hey, there was 1/2″ of snow to break her fall, right?
An hour later their jeans, sweatshirts, shoes, socks, and coats were soaking wet. They stripped in the garage and came in for school. It was a pajama day and we did reading first – any excuse to snuggle up with quilts in front of the Christmas tree!
But before they came in, I do believe they consumed their weight in snow.
And no, I didn’t warn her.
Didn’t I say a Momma’s gotta have some fun?

I was shocked that North Texas (Denton area) hasn’t gotten snow. I’m trying to brace myself for it though.
My kids also don’t own gloves and go with invisible socks through out winter.
I’ve lived in East Texas(Tyler) for nine years, we had snow (good snow) on Valentines Day ’04. It was the best kind of snow, we had a good 2 inches and then it was all gone the next day. That’s my kind of snow.

So fun! I am up in North Tx….I’m glad your kids got to experience the snow!
So much for global warming right? haha!

Wait a minute, I cant find my shovel.
I do have one, some where under all that snow. Maybe the wind took it!

So much fun. My kids love the snow. We usually get it about once every 3 years or so. But we traveled to Iowa last year to see family in Feb and they were in white heaven.

LOVE IT! I was raised near Atlanta, and snow was a rare sight, too. I remember having snow boots (?!? I think they were hand-me-downs from a northern cousin) and being so sad that I could never use them…

My kiddos have been praying for snow here in Florida… might actually happen this year :)

We lived in Houston 1983-1985, and it snowed once then.
Having lived in Ohio for the previous 14 years of my life, I was shocked when the entire city SHUT DOWN….like they had never seen snow before.
It was wonderful.

Wow! Thanks for taking that snow for us…it’s in the 50′s here – we have the heat off and the windows open.

Yeah we got a decent amount here in Amarillo. But I grew up about 30 minutes from Galveston near clear lake and snow was so beyond rare it was crazy. So I will never knock someone’s excitement over a little snow. That and I just finished 5.5 yrs in Idaho and I’m so sick of it its crazy. So if others want to get excited and enjoy it go for it.

Just a tip for next time (uh..35 years from now?)… Socks make great mittens! Just make sure they’re clean ;-)
Kate
Looks like they enjoyed it. And it’s something they’ll always remember. So when they’re grown and it finally snows again, they’ll talk (or blog) about the last time it snowed when they were kids and how they didn’t have any gloves.

I rememer it snowing in Austin when I was a Junior in high school. We’ll leave it at that. I’m not saying how long ago that was. lol

Snow is so fun! We recently moved to an area where we get a lot more of it, and we’re so excited! Other than the fact that I can’t control the wild mess of snow clothes around my house.

My oldest wears no-show socks year ’round, too! And we live where it snows a LOT.

Great photos! I’m not crazy about snow, but I think I would miss it if we lived in a place that doesn’t get it. Great memories for your kids!

Wow. That is so crazy!
My brother just left the wonderful hotness of southern Texas for the wonderful freezingness of southern British Columbia. He misses the hot, which I guess now is a little covered in snow ;)

Snow used to be an unknown, rare thing for us, too. (The last time it snowed near our old home was 1930-something). Now, we have moved to snow country and my children love it. It’s still a novelty enough that they VOLUNTEER to shovel the driveway.
Homeschooling last year, they loved to go sledding while others were still in school and they could have the sledding hill to themselves. They are in school this year, but Daddy took them sledding early today, before the school bus came. Hooray!
Enjoy the snow. I’d love to have my kids home to enjoy it with me. Perhaps we’ll start homeschool again when I’ve adjusted better to being Mom2Seven instead of Mom2Six.

That’s about all the snow we get here in Seattle too. Which is fine by me because I can’t stand it! LOL! It belongs in the mountains. ;-)
And we got some over the weekend too. About 2 inches is all. But since we really don’t get it all that often, it wreaks havoc on everything and pretty much shuts down the schools and all.
Pretty funny! My husband, who grew up in Minnesota, thinks it’s hilarious.
Enjoy it!

So funny that you guys got the snow. It was 50 something in Mass today (Dec 15th). My daughter was in a sun dress! LOL I can’t get her out of those things. She wears them when it is cold too! She even wore them under her soccer t-shirt for games. “Mom. I need a dress that is wider on the bottom so I can run fast.”
A few years ago, my friend in TX had some snow. Her boys, who were preschool age then, ran out into the backyard in their underwear! They couldn’t understand why they were so cold. She is a transplant from MA and I love to call her and tell her about all the snow and cold she is “missing.” Things like “Hey! Remember having to get the kids into snowpants to go outside?” She used to do child care so getting the kids into snowpants was all the kids, not just her own. Talk about work!

How fun! School is out for a snow day. Every kid should get a snow day once in their life

having lived my entire life in a place where show isn’t just the norm in winter, it’s a tiring reality, it’s nice to see snow through eyes of someone who’s never seen it. thanks for the refresher.

I live in Cypress on the NW side of Houston and we were totally robbed of the snow. A few flurries that melted the moment they hit the ground. At least your kids got to have some snow fun!
Leanne
Fun! I’m glad they’re enjoying it. But I think I wanna try a sun dress in winter instead. We get too much of the white stuff up here. Sigh.

And we barely got snow on the 13th. Wacky, wacky weather nowadays. (And I’m the bad mama near the Canadian border who’d forgotten about snow boots for the kids until it finally *did* snow last weekend – guess what they’re getting for Christmas!)

Have you guys thought of enclosing your garage to use as extra living space ?
Seeing your long drive it seems possible to add a garage to the front of enclosed old garage.
Just a thought !
