Mr. OMSH is hunting wild hogs this weekend. Yes, hunt…not trap, lure, or play hide-n-seek with…he’s hunting them. Why? The feral hogs at this particular area he’s going to are increasing in population too fast and are destructive and dangerous.

From one hog to another.

Before PETA releases a throng of fake blood tossers to my front door, know that the Texas Animal Damage Control Service recently began recording the number of problems caused by increased numbers of feral hogs in Texas – and there are many. Oh, and if it helps know that I don’t plan on making coats from their pelts; just in case you were wondering.

In Texas these hogs prey on lambs, kids, fawns, and ground nesting birds. You can see how this becomes more than a little problem at an encampment and retreat for families. The hogs’ trampling and rooting also causes a good deal of damage to field crops and vegetation.

I’ll admit to being a bit nervous for him. I’m hoping they’ll do more time in stands than on foot.

At any rate he’s climbing off one hog to traipse after much smaller ones – hopefully void of tusks and less than 200 lbs. After all, deer season is over and shooting stray cats isn’t as fulfilling as it once was. I’m JOKING! Not that he wouldn’t mind if I stopped feeding every cat that shows up on our doorstep.

Does Mr. Omsh ride horses? Around here when the guys go hog hunting they saddle up and use dogs to bay up the hogs. The hogs are quite mean!

Oh,we totally feel the pain of the feral hogs here! My mother in law has been dealing with them for years now on her woodsy property in a creek bottom in Woodville. They are so hard to trap! And they only come out and rampage at night around her place. So its long nights of dogs barking ferociously and then mornings of muddy, torn up earth all over! Good luck to Mr. OMSH on his hunt, and would he like to camp out and have a go at our place? lol

Wild pigs are quite aggressive. I certainly wouldn’t want to come face to face with one. If he’s got a gun, though, he’ll probably be OK. :D

Looking forward to hearing more to this story, how it all turned out!

    Mmm, pork.

When hunting wild hawgs always make sure to have a tree to climb nearby. I have been run up a tree or two myself. Wild hawgs = aggression and destruction.

I hope the PETA brigade doesn’t show up! Here’s a link to an article detailing how many animals PETA has killed between 1998 and 2005. Go get those wild hogs Mr. OMSH!

Hello! Crystal, I use to live in Woodville. God, I miss it! By any chance do you know the English’s, Walthrops or Gore’s?

Sorry heather, I just miss home and was excited about someone from my neck of the woods.

Word to the wise. Don’t post any photos of the field dressed hogs. Mr. Mom hunts hogs, too. And I posted the results. Let’s just say, the general reading public isn’t ready for carcass photos. It was a painful lesson for the Magpie.

I laughed so hard at that last part. My husband would love that too.

Hey! Ang…(sorry Heather to hijack!)..my husband is from Woodville and so he may very well know the people you are asking about. He knows most everyone, I’d say, ha. Right now we are living in Lumberton, just moved back from The Woodlands to take a job (he is a Land Surveyor) in Beaumont. In the next year we hope to move back to Woodville. I was surprised to see your comment about it actually! What a small world!
